The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced that it has expanded the Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program to include 12 additional conditions. The SSA has now approved a total of 278 diseases and medical conditions for the CAL initiative. The program is reviewed and adjusted periodically based on changes in medical practice, diagnostics, and new medical knowledge.
About the SSA Compassionate Allowances Program
According to the SSA, Compassionate Allowances are a way to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that clearly meet Social Security’s standards for disability and accelerate the agency’s decision-making process. These conditions include certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and rare disorders affecting children.
What Conditions are Covered Under the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances Program?
There are a total of 278 Compassionate Allowances Conditions, and the 12 that were recently added to this list include:
- 1p36 Deletion Syndrome
- Anaplastic Ependymoma
- Calciphylaxis
- Cholangiocarcinoma
- FOXG1 Syndrome
- Leber Congenital Amaurosis
- Metastatic Endometrial Adenocarcinoma
- Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration
- Pineoblastoma – Childhood
- Primary Omental Cancer
- Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the Lung – Stages II-IV
- Trisomy 9

How to Apply for the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances Program
To apply for the Compassionate Allowances Program, you must apply for disability benefits. You can do so by:
- Completing your application online;
- Calling the SSD toll-free telephone number 1-800-772-1213 or, if are deaf or hard of hearing, calling 1-800-325-0778; or
- Visiting a local Social Security office.
